The new maxi EP from norwegian retrofuturists Insomniac Bears is an ambitious combination of ferocious guitar licks and gleaming pop melodies that pierce through a heavy psychedelic undertone. Somewhere in between crafting pop and creating art they take us to unexplored territory with sprightly prog-rock figures and distinctly indie-sounding anthems. Expect sharp compositions sprawling with intuitive charm and immediate melodies with a roaring largesse.

Insomniac Bears consists of multi-instrumentalist Marius Ergo (Lukestar, Kaospilot & Snöras), Rumble in Rhodos-singer Thomas Bratlie Haugland, Team Me-frontman Marius Drogsås Hagen and songwriter/violinist Magnus Moriarty. Since their last release they have also included star boy Axel Skalstad(Krokofant ++) on drums as a permanent member, giving the group a new dimension and sound. Sure enough, this combo of players have pushed each others explorations further than before, resulting in a new musical collective to look out for.

First single, ”Passing Trains” was out February 15th 2019 on Fysisk Format - Full of mysticism and great hooks with a dark undercurrent that permeate the music. ”Passing Trains” is the first single to come out of the studio sessions with great producer Lars Horntveth (Jaga Jazzist, Susanne Sundfør, Kimbra, A-Ha ++) following the release of ”Hypercolor” Maxi EP in 2018. The story is about learning how to acclimate and carve out a space of security in a world that offers only perpetual instability. The lyrics alongside the music inhabits its own distinct phase of loneliness and maps the flipside of achieving independence.

The second single ”A nod in the Darkness” drops April 5th and feels like a riot of vintage synthesizers, paired with great hooks and rounded out with the right amount of psych-pop. There is something about the way they let the freak flag fly, that gives off a really healthy energy. Being themselves completely, not conforming to anything. The story behind ”A Nod in the Darkness” surrounds the tragic loss of a close family member, propelling songwriter Marius Hagen into an exercise of active self-acceptance and how to navigate independence in the face of heartbreak.
